jase blogging...

the democratic national convention is coming up and before you know it, it will be time to vote for our next president. what if obama wins? dont get me wrong, i want him to win, but i question if i'm ready for the changes that will bring.

honestly, i think we still live in a society that sees black men in a very narrow scope (just ask CNN, lol). but, if obama wins what will society expect from me? will it expect me to stop playing football because it is the stereotypical route for black males to find their way out of the hood? or will it take away affirmative action? if a black man made it to the white house, do i really need help getting into college or corporate america?

so far, what society thinks of me (or black men in general) has not turned me away from following my dream... just something to think about

black in america

jase blogging...

did u guys catch part 1 on the CNN special "black in america" last night? judging by facebook statuses and IM away messages, many of you did. for those who didn't, i'll give a little recap:

part 1 focused on black women and the black family. some of the topics addressed were single-parent homes, the alarming rate at which black women are contracting HIV, and the decision of successful, black women to date outside of their race because there arent enough black men on their level (which is sad to hear as a black man trying to succeed in life, but at the same time i guess its understandable because we've always explored options with other races with no regard to the effects it has on our community).

tonight is part 2 of the 2 part special and the focus is on the black man. i've seen a couple of commercials and can guess what some of the main topics will be:

  • criminal activity and the judicial system
  • hip hop culture
  • "down-low" homosexuality (which will be directly related to the fact that so many black men experience it in jail and dont know how to deal with it once they're out)

many ppl in black communities and the american society as a whole believe that rap music and sports are 2 of the only options for black men to rise above their surroundings and be successful in life and i cant wait to see how CNN will address this. as an inspiring athlete, i have mixed emotions about this. on one hand i agree because i have seen ppl that come from humble beginnings use these forms of entertainment to gain money, power, and respect in a society that isnt always accommodating to our type. but, at the same time, i believe that ppl think that if thats the path you choose, its because you're not good at anything else. like by default, because i am atletically inclined, i'm not smart and there's no way i'd ever make it in corporate america.

while i may be grindin toward one particular aspiration, please believe i have a plan b, plan c, and many other options in life that dont include a jail cell or early grave.

i cant wait to see how mainstream media has typecast me this time...

did anyone hear about the controversy with justin timberlake @ the espy's the other nite? well, from my understanding, he was doing a skit about the celtics and made a racially-charged comment about paul pierce (something about "shucking and jiving"). that remark was edited out of the broadcast, but alot of ppl in attendance were not to happy and have spoken out against it.

other than the obvious question (what the F is wrong wit this clown?), my question is WHAT DOES JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE HAVE TO DO WIT SPORTS???

of course there are non-athlete celebrities that participate, i get that, but after the janet jackson/superbowl incident, why was justin timberlake even included? i dont appreciate how he tried to throw janet under the bus and play innocent. i'm not just saying this bc i've had a crush on her since i was n diapers, but do we really believe this clown timberlake aint have no idea that the incident was goin down? lets be real.

in my opinion, i dont even think the typical sports fan is also the typical timberlake fan, so let him present over at mtv somewhere.

i'm all about following your dreams and inspiring others to do the same. i was recently introduced to this new blog and am really feeling what this young lady has 2 say. check it out:

redefiningourdreams.blogspot.com

i'm gonna have a blog roll soon and we're gonna link 2 each other (or however that whole situation works out, i'm still new 2 blogging) but i wanted to give u guys a heads up bc i think this is really good stuff.

a lot of ppl say "make haters ur motivators" and i guess that works in some situations, but why not be motivated by others who are following their dreams and doing great things?

so, hit her up and show her some love.

get like me

jj blogging...

this tip is not just for aspiring athletes or ppl trying to get in shape, its for everyone:

DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!

the recommended is 8 glasses a day (i prob double that) but really, its always the best option especially in these hot summer months. i'm not a doctor, so i can't co-sign on some things you may have heard (like cold water speeds up your metabolism) but i do know its healthier than super sweet, extra carbonated, high caloric alternatives.

so, drink up!

a bit of weekend inspiration

jase blogging...

when we make it our life's goal to please the Lord, the result is JOY, PEACE, and FULFILLMENT. on the other hand, whenever we try to please other people, we experience FUSTRATION, DISAPPOINTMENT, and EMPTINESS.

allow me 2 reintroduce myself...

whats up everybody,

this is the "soft launch" of my blog and the official launch will be in about a week or so, but i wanted 2 take a lil time now 2 let u know what my blog and i are about...

my name is jason and as u can tell from the scenery i'm tryn 2 take my game to the major league. while this is my ultimate career goal and the focus of most of my time, its not what i'm all about. i hope that you will subscribe 2 my blog and follow my career pursuits as well as get 2 know me outside of football. i am active with the youth in my community and would like to highlight that as well.

in addition to blogging about my career pursuits and community involvement, i will offer "get fit" tips for other aspiring athletes (or any1 who wants 2 get in shape) and motivational/inspirational quotes 2 help you reach your dreams or just make it through the day. i will also regularly react to your comments and the results of the poll, so pretty much, if u let me know what u wanna talk about, i'll address it.

fyi: any posts that start wit "jj blogging..." will be football related and any starting wit "jase blogging..." will be from my more personal side (lol).

ok, thats the short version of what this is all about. hope ur interested.

now, come follow my journey...
